Hi friends! Just a little blog name update — This is now The Sewing Things Blog!
When I started blogging 6 years ago, I had just started sewing, and still wasn’t committed (read: scared) to making this a sewing blog. My husband and I did a lot of different things that I would blog about, so ‘The Doing Things Blog’ felt ambiguous enough. Now when I tell people the title of my blog, it feels a little bit silly since it’s all sewing. So, I decided to not overcomplicate it and just change “doing” to “sewing”. Nothing else is changing. I’m still just going to blog about my obsession of t-shirts, wash away tape, and the occasional dress.
The other thing I have to share is that I have a ONE YEAR OLD! No tears here, because I actually prefer the toddler stage over the newborn stage. Haha. We had a fun little birthday party while my husband’s mom and grandma were in town, and I even had time to whip up a little dress for her!
I made her this ‘pillowcase dress’ that is entirely too big, but this picture hides it. Haha. You might recognize this as the bottom of my Cris Wood Sews Envelope Dress, and you would be right! I also used the leftover fabric from my Free Range Slacks to make 1-7/8 double fold bias binding for the ties.
I watched a YouTube video by Nancy’s Notions on how to make it, and could only find very rough pattern instructions. So, I kind of winged it and this is more like the size for a 2 year old. It’s basically a 21″x18″ rectangle when laying flat, with 2″x5″ cut out for the armscye. If I were to do this again, I would probably make it 18″ wide (instead of 21″), and make the armscye 3.5-4″ deep (instead of 5″). It was pretty easy though, and I was finished within a few hours.
She wore this in her ‘smash cake’ photos, and then it was dirty, so I couldn’t take photos of her standing in it. Once it was clean again, I hurried to take a few photos and then she promptly ripped it off. Haha. I guess it’s a good thing that it’s kind of big on her because it will probably still fit when she’s 2, and can probably wear it as a cute top when she gets taller.
That’s what’s happening around here! I am so grateful that you are following along, and I look forward to sharing more beautiful things in the future to hopefully help or inspire you in some way!
What’s something new or exciting happening in your life right now?
Love the new name, but I give you permission to blog about other “things” too, haha!
I have to agree that life gets more fun.. when littles begin crawling, and then walking and talking. (Read: you get to move while interacting… Hence “doing things”!)
Looking forward to your next post!
Thank you so much, Lodi! I will definitely still blog about other things if I have something else to share, but it’s safe to say that the majority will be sewing. 😉
I love when babies start to explore the world and get a little more independent. Thank you for your kind comments!
She’s darling Tori! It’s pretty fun to sew for little girls. (She’ll eventually be old enough not to tear it off 😉
I still get inspired to sew when I see what you’re making, but I still haven’t found the time for it. I’ll let you know if I finally start down my own “sewing things” list. 🙂 But in the meantime, keep up the good work!
Thank you so much, Elasha! She is so funny, and yes, at some point she won’t tear it off. Maybe then I’ll decide to sew more things for her…maybe. Haha!
You are so sweeet and it makes me so happy to know you still get inspired by my blog! Life gets so busy, and sometimes we find other skills and talents that are more worth our time at the moment, so don’t get down about it. 😉 I look forward to hearing about when you start – no matter when it is!
