Denmark Summer Vacation

Hello! We recently got back from our weeklong summer vacation in Denmark, and I thought it would be fun to write a post about my favorite parts of the trip (wearing mostly me-made things!). It was so much fun and luckily everyone stayed healthy the whole time. I’m always nervous that someone is going to catch something along the way.

We stayed three different places and loved all of them for different reasons. It was fun to explore a different country and see how different it is from the US and Portugal. I was especially curious about visiting Denmark, since a lot of my ancestors came from there.

Our first stay was in a little suburb in Copenhagen because we just needed a place to relax before we went to Billund (where Legoland is). It was a really nice area and a super cool Airbnb. We met my mother-in-law there, so it was nice to relax and have a whole free day to catch up with her. There was a lot of fun stuff to keep my kids entertained too, so that was fantastic.

The weather was beautiful and I wore my new Roxie Tee and most recent Union St Tee that I made in a cotton slub fabric.

Next stop was Billund, Denmark. We stayed at a farm about 10 minutes away from Legoland. The farm had horses that my kids got to ride and some kittens that my daughter could not leave alone. They had a campfire going every night and a playground, trampoline, bikes, and a tented area full of Legos for the kids. There was plenty of space to run around and it was a nice little break from the city.

We took a full day to explore Legoland and the next full day for Lego House. It was really fun, although the racing ride that was brand new was closed. Boo. So that was a huge bummer. It didn’t stop us from getting a picture with giant Lego Roxie (above). I’m wearing another new Union St Tee in hot pink that I haven’t gotten around to sharing.

Our last stay was definitely my favorite. We went back to Copenhagen and stayed downtown in a hostel just a block away from the Tivoli Gardens. Disneyland has nothing on Tivoli. The park is so cleverly designed so that you can get to different rides really quickly and we had so much fun in the 4 hours that we were there. The flowers everywhere are amazing. The pink one in the 3rd photo below was as big as my head!

The next day we went on a canal tour, and my kids were pretty bored, so they went back to the hostel with Dallas. But my MIL and I had plenty of energy still, so we walked around and found the Rainbow Canal with all of the colorful buildings. It was so beautiful and the boats were cool.

The next day we planned a lot better and got the Copenhagen Pass for 24 hours. We went a few different places, but the botanical garden and fabric shopping at Self Made were the highlights for me. The botanical garden had a butterfly house with cocoons that butterflies were literally breaking out of while we were there! (2nd photo below) My favorite butterfly looked like glass because its wings were transparent. (3rd photo below)

Self Made was an awesome store with everything fiber arts. It was spacious, beautiful, and so organized, which is bad news for me because I thrive in that environment. Lol. I forgot to take any photos at the store, but I took one on the way back to the hostel and a photo of my treasures when we were back home in Portugal.

The cotton denim at the top of this photo is actually a fabric that my MIL brought me from Style Maker Fabrics. It’s been surprisingly hard for me to find medium weight cotton denim (without spandex) in a normal indigo color in Europe. At Self Made I got a cotton jacquard, cotton jersey, cotton for pocket lining, felt for the holiday season, zippers for bottoms, and rainbow webbing for a future bag for my brother-in-law.

I packed a couple of my Free Range Slacks and my trusty black Neve Sweater which got me through the chilly parts of the trip. Luckily, we didn’t get rained on when we were out and about because I failed to pack my rain jacket.

I’ve never seen so many bicycles in my entire life! We were also pleasantly surprised that the public transportation is very clean, frequent, and reliably on time (not something we’re used to in Lisbon). Here are a couple of honorable mention photos that I loved but didn’t have place for…

I also started a book and read most of it while we were there. I may have stayed up way too late a couple of nights because I picked a thriller. I read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and it was a trip. That book is crazy. I still can’t even bring myself to rate it on Goodreads because I don’t even know what I would rate it.

After a book like that I needed a pallet cleanser. So now, I’m reading another book from Emily Henry called Great Big Beautiful Life and listening to the 2nd volume of The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion. I’m really enjoying both.
