Free Sewing Patterns

Over the past 9 years of sewing garments, I’ve made a few free patterns. I thought it would be fun to do a little roundup, and hopefully it will be a helpful resource too.

If you click on any of the titles of the patterns, it will take you to the pattern page or to the page that tells you where to subscribe to receive the pattern. If I’ve written a blog post on the project, I will link to it somewhere in the paragraph below. I’ll try to keep this up to date if I make other free patterns, as well.

This post includes tops, a dress, a bag, aprons, kid’s patterns, and one tutorial, so I hope you find something you like!

(sizes: 84-124.5cm bust & 92.5-130.5 hips | 33-49″ bust & 36.5-51.5″ hips)

This has been my favorite pattern this summer. So much so that I’ve made 3 tanks and one tank dress! I wear them so often that once they’re clean, I’m already ready to wear them again. This tank fits just like the perfect t-shirt, but without the sleeves to overheat you.

I found that choosing the size closest to your measurements gets you the best fit. I made a small adjustment after making my first one, by scooping .5″ out of the front armscye, and I really like the results.

(sizes: 76-146.6cm bust & 87-157.6cm hips | 30-58″ bust & 34-62″ hips)

After seeing so many Blomma Tanks on Instagram, I finally made my own! This pattern is such a great basic and I wore mine so much this summer. I tried making small adjustments to the pattern the first few times that I made it, but the differences weren’t very noticeable, and I got a little burned out on it. So, the one shown above is the 4th one I made in my regular size with no adjustments besides length.

Monroe Turtleneck

(sizes: 81-111cm bust & 91-121cm hips)

When I lived in Washington, I wore these two Monroes constantly! They were perfect for the chilly days, but now I keep them for the winter. They’re so comfortable and easy to wear.

I replaced the turtleneck neckline with the crewneck of the Panama Tee, but you can use any knit crewneck pattern that you have. I also find the sleeves to be a bit tight on me, so I took the sleeve pattern piece from the Panama and compared it with the Monroe sleeve piece. Then I redrew the line to make the sleeves wider. It’s a good trick to make sure the sleeves won’t be too tight on you, because realizing that too late is so annoying.

The Mandy Boat Tee (sizes: 81-116cm bust & 91-126cm hips) is also a very similar pattern by the same pattern company, but I ended up liking the Monroe better.

Stellan Tee

(sizes: 80-151cm bust & 88-159cm hips | 31.5-59.5″ bust & 34.5-62.5″ hips)

The Stellan Tee has been such a popular pattern over the years! I made this version in 2019. French Navy has since expanded the size range, so that’s awesome.

For the one shown above, I sized up to the XL (my measurements then put me at the large), because I wanted it to be more of a slouchy fit. The instructions show you how to do the neck reinforcement which is cool.

I loved this shirt, but this fabric quickly got super pill-y after washing it a few times which was a huge bummer. I would love to make it again in lightweight/drapey fabric like this again.

(sizes: 81-97cm bust & 87-103″ hips)

I made this Orla in 2018 and it is very cute, but a little bit too cutesy for me. The size range is pretty limited, especially since I think I had to make the largest size. It was a fun make though and great, if it’s your style.

(sizes: Small/Medium/Large)

The Sun Tote is such a great base pattern, and it has 3 different sizes. I enjoyed making the medium size this summer to use as a beach bag. There are a few ideas and changes I would make if I made it again, so if you’re interested in reading those ideas, I wrote more about them in the blog post.

DIY Apron

Sew DIY Apron Tutorial

I made these for my husband and I in 2021, and I did kind of a mashup of the Sew DIY Apron and the Avery Apron (shown below). We brought the kitchen ones with us and still use them all the time. My husband loved using his shop apron in the garage when he was working on projects, but sadly it’s in storage in the US for now.

The big difference to pay attention to before diving into making an apron is to decide where you want it to tie – at your natural waist or your hips. Dallas loved that his shop apron tied at the hip, but I didn’t realize that and his kitchen one ties at the natural waist. He still wears it but would prefer it lower in the future.

(adult sizes: 32-51″ chest, children’s sizes: 19-30″ chest)

My kids LOVE this apron! I originally made this one for my son, but now it gets worn more by my daughter who is the same age now. I found the loop for the neck to be kind of big, but I think it needs to be that big to get it over their head. So, if you know a fancy way to make the loop adjustable, that would be better.

Lowland Hoodie

(kids, sizes: NB-9/10)

Halloween of 2019 was the most sewing I’ve ever done for Halloween when I made the three of us dinosaur hoodies! They turned out much better than I was expecting, and my son loved wearing his until he grew out of it.

I actually hacked his to be a zip up hoodie and forgot that the top needed a stopper or to be sewn in so the zipper wouldn’t zip off, but I think I just hand sewed some thread around the top and called it good. Lol.

It was a great pattern though, and now that I’m looking at it again, I think it would be fun to make one for my daughter before she grows out of the size range.

Leggin's by Love Notions | The Sewing Things Blog
Love Notions Leggin’s

(kids, sizes 2T-14yrs)

I’ve made this pattern a couple of times now, and it’s so handy to have. I don’t really like winging it when I make things, so I like having a pattern that has actually been drafted.

I usually try my daughter’s other leggings up to it to decide on the size and what length to make them. I made the shorts above to go with a dress that I made for my daughter, so she can wear the shorts underneath when she wants to.

This isn’t a pattern, but a shameless plug for a tutorial I made in 2017 after I had my son. I’ve made a few for myself when I had babies and as gifts for friends. It’s super easy to make one as long as you follow the instructions well, since they are for carrying precious cargo. 😉

If you got to the end of this blog post, you are a rockstar!! Sewing can be a little bit daunting, so if you are new to sewing (or not!), I hope you found something to try making without having to spend money on the pattern. Thank you so much for reading my blog today!

  1. Great round up, Tori! I love the description of all the items that you’ve sewn with free patterns and the changes you’ve made. I made a Monroe turtleneck the other day in a great sweater fabric and I love it! It’s a go-to pattern for me, along with the Mandy Boat Tee (as long as you increase the sleeve width.
Thanks for sharing all the other patterns. I’ll be checking back for more suggestions 😘

    1. Thank you, Karen! I haven’t made the Monroe with the turtleneck yet, but it looks beautiful! I’m so excited to see yours. Thank you for reading! 💕

  2. Thank you for pointing out Blomma Tank some time ago! It’s a great basic pattern with great instruction. My first Blomma was made with no modifications, then I started to tweak it a bit (moving shoulder straps outwards, deeper neckline, longer hem) and now it’s perfect for me. And it’s such a great training field for different finishing techniques.

    1. You’re welcome, Maria! The Blomma is one of my favorites too, and I wear mine often. I’m so glad it’s worked well for you too!

  3. I LOVE the Tabitha Tank! I made it as a tank (of course) and then lengthened it to a long dress and have gotten so many compliments. Thank you!!!

    1. I’m with you on that! The Tabitha Tank is such a great base for a dress! I’m so glad you made one that you love too. 🥰
