In the 9-ish years that I’ve been sewing consistently, I’ve only sewn exactly one bag, and it wasn’t the most pleasant experience (it’s been 3+ years since I made it). Then, about 3 weeks ago, I finally had the itch to try again, and now I have 3 bag patterns to share! This first bag is the Large Loop Bag by Motif Studio. The pattern also has a small size, or you can buy both sizes in one.
Fleur with Motif Studio reached out a while ago and let me choose one of her patterns to make. The loop bag caught my attention since it was most similar to the bag that I’ve been using for the past 4 years, but I liked that the loop added a cool detail.
Sometimes, when I see how much hardware other bag patterns call for, I get intimidated, but Motif Studio bag patterns are made without hardware so you can easily whip them up with fabrics you might already have in your fabric stash.
I was very glad I started out with this bag to ease myself into bag making. The pattern has very clear photos and instructions. It was really simple and easy to follow, so I didn’t run into any issues or frustrating parts.
We have some warm days this week, so I took my bag with me to the beach for its first outing. It’s the perfect sized tote for my beach hat, a few sand toys, a water bottle, some snacks, and sunglasses. This large size is a little bit bigger than I was expecting, so next time I’ll definitely make the smaller size and maybe lengthen the long handle by a couple of inches to make it more of an everyday bag.
I used a heavy cotton canvas from Divazus for the outside, which worked great and gave it some good structure. For the inside lining and pockets, I used a cotton ikat that I had leftover from making my Roscoe Blouse. So far, I’m a huge fan of how little fabric bag-making takes and how many smaller cuts of fabric I’ve been able to use up!
I think the bag turned out nice and I felt confident enough afterwards to dive into making another bag that I’ll share later this week. As always, leave and questions or comments that you have below, and happy bag making! xoxo
Cute bag. And useful as well. I love bag making. And now I want to make this one as an errand bag.
Thank you! It would be perfect for running errands. I’m starting to really love bag making too.
