Another Year, Another Janie Dress

I’ve made the Janie Dress for Vanessa four times now (a new one almost every year since she was two). I don’t have anything new to report except these new photos of a happy, twirling 6-year-old (temporary leg tattoo and all).

This fabric is a cotton jersey of sorts, but I think it might have some polyester in it, too, because it’s not like my other cotton jerseys and has a slight chemical smell. It did work well for this dress though, and it’s a beautiful color. It washes well and dries quickly (also why I think it has poly in it). I don’t think I’ll be using any of the leftover fabric for me, but I might make a pair of shorts for V.

She really wanted pockets this time, so I learned from previous mistakes and under stitched the pockets. It did help a lot! You can see the little slit of the pocket in the second picture below. They lay much nicer and don’t roll out like the one that I made for her with pockets a couple of years ago.

I did the low back for this dress, but her hair is covering it in every photo I have of it. I love the low back and have done it for her last 3 dresses. It’s much easier for her to put on than the crewneck which is pretty small.

I made the size 6 and lengthened it by 1.5 inches, which I think I usually do. I should probably lengthen it more in the future, but I always forget to. It hits right above her knee, and she loves it, so this version is a success. She looks forward to having a new Janie dress every time, so I’m enjoying it while it lasts.

I made this dress right before our Denmark vacation, and she immediately wore it the first day after we got there. Lol.

Speaking of short and sweet, I went with some other sewing friends to a fiber arts festival near me this weekend and visited our friend Kate’s booth. She has an embroidery business called, Short and Sweets and has beautiful designs! I haven’t done a lot of embroidery, so I started small with some little hoops and stick-on designs that I’ll probably do each year as Christmas ornaments. She made a lot of kits and things for the festival, but she also sells PDF Designs on Etsy if you’re into those. This also reminded me that it’s probably a good time to start thinking of Christmas presents – in case you also need the reminder.
