Fall is here!! It’s finally starting to cool off and even though I love summer, fall comes in as a close second. I love being able to break out my cardigans and layer my outfits.
I recently joined the Indiesew Blogger Team, and I am so excited to share the other things I have been making! Indiesew is a great website with a ton of patterns (200+ and counting) from really talented pattern designers (I should know because I’ve tested quite a few!). They also have some really cute unique fabric (that disappears pretty quick if you’re not fast enough).
I have been wanting a cardigan like the Laurelhurst by Straight Stitch Designs for a while now, and I was so excited to finally have the chance to make one.
I LOVE this cardigan. I don’t know if it’s the fabric or the fit, or probably just both. But it’s going to get a lot of wear this winter. I used a medium-weight knit fabric that is so soft, and it was fairly easy to sew.
I sewed up a size 12 without altering or changing anything. Can we talk about these sleeves?! These sleeves are the best because they were so long already. I’m 5″11 and I have pretty long arms, but even after hemming, the sleeves were still a really great length. I love that, because I hate that awkward length where you just want to push them up all the time!
I had everything cut out and sewed together in about two hours, and the instructions were simple and straight-forward. The step where you sew across the shoulders is a little bit tricky (sewing on a curve always is), but if you take it slow and really watch what you’re doing, then you’ll be fine.
For those of you who saw my Fall Sewing Inspiration post, I posted this picture as one of my inspiration photos and knew right away that this pattern would be perfect for it!
I am also itching to find some really good olive green knit fabric to make another one- like this! …oooh or this.
I chose to do a binding on the bottom half of the cardigan, and it took longer than making the cardigan itself (but I really wanted that look). I bought some cotton binding at JoAnn’s, but really didn’t like the feel, and it didn’t let the fabric drape as well. So I took some black knit fabric that I had and just made my own binding using this video (which is super informative and helpful).
Binding the corners was a whole other story, but I basically just looked up how to miter corners, and figured out a way that worked for this project.
The Laurelhurst pattern instructions don’t make you hem the edges at all, but I think when I make this cardigan again, I will hem it and just not add binding.
Do you have any cardigan patterns you love? What ‘fall makes’ are you excited to sew?
Thank you to Indiesew for the pattern. All opinions of the pattern are honest and my own.
